THE BEGINNING OF THE PATHWAY
The reward pathway in the brain plays a key role in shaping how you experience pleasure (especially from food), motivation, decision-making, and even addiction. It is a network of neural structures which start in the region of the brain known as the ventral tegmental area (VTA), where dopamine is produced.
THE DOPAMINE JOURNEY
From the VTA, dopamine travels along the pathway through brain regions such as the hypothalamus, amygdala, ventral pallidum, and nucleus accumbens, all of which influence hunger and thirst, reward processing, habit formation, emotional responses, motivation, goal-setting, impulse control, and even movement.
THE FINAL STOP
The pathway ends at the prefrontal cortex, the region of our brain where we do a lot of our thinking. This is the part of the reward pathway that helps us control our decisions, inhibition, problem solving, memory, impulse control, planning, reasoning, our food cravings, and organization. Essentially, it’s where control over our behavior and so much more is regulated.
I put this here in case you wanted more detail. It’s a busy picture, but if you want to take a closer look, click on it and it will open in a new window.
Dysfunction In the Reward Pathway Can Lead to Weight Gain
At TWC, we understand how powerful this pathway is, and why it’s so important to understand it and learn strategies for enhancing it so it works in your favor, which is why our curriculum focuses on emotional regulation, impulse control, motivation, and so much more. We believe that motivation is often overrated, so we emphasize momentum—the small, consistent actions that drive long-term success. We also place a strong focus on self-reflection: examining your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors to understand the impact they have on your decisions and outcomes.
OUR BEHAVIOR INTERVENTION
Our behavior intervention strategies are grounded in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). These evidence-based therapies address the entire reward pathway, from emotional regulation in the amygdala, to decision-making and goal-directed behavior in the prefrontal cortex, and the behaviors that drive results throughout.
